Carrollton, Texas child care: physical and brain development in infancy

Posted on 06-23-2014

In the first year of your child’s life, rapid growth takes place as your child develops from a newborn into an adventurous toddler. Here is a helpful guide to what is happening to your child, mentally and physically:

  • The first four weeks: Known as the neonatal period, the first month of your child’s life is characterized by fragility and requires gentle treatment. Her brain will start to change from a mass of mostly unconnected brain cells as it begins building neural pathways in response to sensory stimulus. Your child will learn to pick out your voice but she will only be able see about forty inches away.
  • 2-3 months: These months are full of milestones, from developing the ability to hold her head steady while supported to rolling over from side to back. Your child will start to develop better control over her arms and legs, and to recognize familiar faces. She will also respond to gentle play.
  • 4-6 months: This is when she will learn how to roll from her back to her side and sit with support. Everything in reach will be grasped and put into her mouth, so careful supervision is necessary. Your child’s attention will be drawn to moving objects and she will focus on familiar people as they move around. Laughing and babbling will start as her language skills begin.
  • 7-9 months: Your child will likely be able to sit unaided at this stage and will start crawling around, eventually pulling up on furniture into a standing position. She will have developed a preference for specific toys and activities and may start mimicking the expressions of parents and caregivers, responding strongly to emotional gestures.
  • 10-12 months: At this stage, your child will start to want to feed herself at meals, picking up food between the thumb and forefinger. Movement will involve trying to walk, eventually resulting in her first steps. Language development usually reaches a milestone at this stage with her first word or two.

A great way to stimulate your child’s mental and physical development is to expose them to interesting new sensory experiences. Infant swimming classes at WaterKids not only give you and your child a fun bonding experience, they also teach your child an essential life skill.

At Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Castle Hills, we have the leading Brain Waves Curriculum which is designed to provide the right amount of stimulation through sensory play and other activities. This curriculum optimizes mental and physical development in children from the ages of six weeks to five years.
